Dangling Database Connection Detector
Detect dangling references to the database that applications may have been left connected even after the need to have a connection no more exists.

Challenges
  • Database connections are limited resources per system.

  • Difficult to maintain a constant pool of resources so that these can be allocated to the needed application.

Results
When applications do not release the DB connection resources to the pool, applications when needed will not get connections and result in system failure and/or call failure.

Tool (Solution):  Coscend's Dangling Database Connection Detector
  • Monitor and detect dangling references in an automated way.
  • Catch and report resource hogging incidents.
Key Features
  • Uses Solaris 10 provided DTRACE facility to write scripts that can monitor such situations in the code.
  • Runs during the time of initialization of application to provide DB connections.
Benefits
  • Knowledge of the situation in the early stages helps prevent the issue upfront, rather than fixing the issue when known at a customer site.
  • Can be applied in-house at client’s site, errors can be captured upfront and fixed before the product hits their customer site.
  • Eliminate high-cost debugging sessions at customer premises.
Impact
  • Resources are made available to all applications when needed basis and applications run in harmony.
  • Suggest enhancements to achieve optimum performance.
  • Accelerate time-to-market.
